Accomplishment leads to re-brand for 14-year-old Portland creative agency

PORTLAND, Ore. – June 22, 2009 – Blackfish Creative has changed its name. The 14-year-old Portland creative agency is now Riley Weiss, a firm that builds and nourishes brands.

“Our own experiences, accomplishments and self-reflection have created new energy, new focus, and, in turn, new creativity for our clients,” says Drew Force, principal, founder and creative director. “No business can continue to do what they’ve always done and expect to thrive. Our own proactive re-brand positions us to create deeper relationships with clients and turn more diverse business challenges into fun and impactful opportunities.”

The firm’s evolution to Riley Weiss – along with its recent acquisition of and move to the historic Couch Schoolhouse in Northwest Portland’s Nob Hill district – is the culmination of a dynamic, two-year internal journey. “We as a team have consensus – now, after 14 successful years in business, is the right time to acknowledge our long track record and move ahead with bold new thinking,” adds 10-year agency veteran Dan Rubin, director of client services. “It is the perfect time to reflect on client needs and re-discover what motivates them, then articulate that voice and those values outwardly to their consumers.”

The name Riley Weiss reflects the integrity and progressive spirit of the firm, rooted in the characteristics of Force’s two grandmothers: Helen Riley and Mary Ella Weiss. Riley was the giver; the humble, hardworking caretaker. Weiss was bold and freethinking; wide-eyed and independent.

Riley Weiss is also announcing the addition and appointment of Douglas Heikkinen as president. Heikkinen is a 24-year veteran of the financial services industry, working for top firms such as Charles Schwab and the M Financial Group. “Doug’s deep experience in marketing, business planning, and organizational innovation makes him the perfect leader to help drive our growth strategy and propel Riley Weiss for years to come. We are truly excited about the insight and energy he adds to the team,” says Force.

Over the years the firm has served clients including adidas, Intel, Johnson Outdoors, The Nature Conservancy, The Oregon Zoo, Tektronix, Xerox and Zupan’s Markets, among many others.
